For its connected objects, Xiaomi offers two product ranges: Aqara and Mijia, sometimes with products with similar functionalities but where the difference can be decisive in choosing the right model, especially Xiaomi temperature sensors.

In terms of door and window sensors, Xiaomi offers two models: one in its Aqara range, the other in its Mijia range. But then, what are the differences between these two products?

Aqara Door and Window Sensor

The Aqara Door and Window Sensor uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with the Xiaomi gateway. In terms of sensor operation, it is a magnetic switch that will determine whether the door is open or closed. The state of the sensor can be used in your home automation scenarios to perform certain actions depending on its state (open or closed).

The fixing is done by means of a sticker for both parts of the detector, which is also the case for the Mijia model. The battery life, which is in the form of a CR1632 battery, is estimated at 1 year.

Mijia Door and Window Sensor

While some Mijia products do not use Zigbee as a communication protocol but BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), this one does use Zigbee as the Aqara model. This accessory is provided in some Xiaomi Mijia Smart Home starter packs that you buy online. Of course, it is also possible to acquire it individually.

The battery life, which is in the form of a CR1632 battery, is estimated at 1 year. An identical battery to the Aqara model, which is not surprising since both models are of the same size and offer an equivalent autonomy.

Door and Window Sensor: Mijia VS Aqara

To conclude this article, I will answer the basic question: what are the differences between the Aqara and Mijia opening detectors?

They both use the Zigbee protocol for communication and the same type of contactor: magnetic. Once the two parts of the sensor are fixed, the maximum distance between the two must not exceed 22 mm: no difference either at this level.

In fact, I'll probably disappoint you, but the main difference is in the design: the Aqara accessory is rather rectangular, while the Mijia is much more rounded. It should be noted that the advantage of the Aqara model is that it is compatible with both Xiaomi gateways. It should also be noted that the Xiaomi Mijia sensor is older than the Aqara model.

If you have the Aqara gateway (HomeKit compatible) then your choice should naturally focus on this model. Depending on the current offers, prices may vary from one model to another, which may guide your choice if you are not focused on the design more of one than the other.
